The “coronavirus job retention scheme” has undoubtedly been a success in protecting jobs at the height of the pandemic and HMRC has confirmed that, as of 2 August 2020, the total number of jobs furloughed is 9.8 million. With 1.2 million employers furloughing staff members and the total value of claims to date being £33.8bn, with this figure likely to increase before the CJRS ends.
